.

Firstly let’s address the elephant in the room. The OzTent RV tent line are not a cheap purchase. Any tent will end up being an investment into your camping equipment but this is a particularly pricey tent.

Luckily there are a few different sizes and options in the The OzTent RV range to suite individual needs and budgets.

So the burning question I know you are asking “is it really worth the price tag?”

Why you might consider buying an RV-OzTent.

Buying a tent is hard. There are so many options and it’s a very saturated market.

Maybe you are still deciding between a roof top tent or a stand alone tent?

Are you looking to upgrade your current tent?

Or perhaps this is your first tent?

This line of tents are a great option for someone who is overland traveling, road tripping and weekend camping. It offers different size options based on your individual requirements.

So why would you consider investing more than $1000 into a tent? Let’s look at the pros and cons.

PRO’S

  • Takes 30 seconds to erect. Plus minimal time to peg down.
  • The tent is tall enough for you to stand up in to get dressed.
  • You can comfortably fit multiple people inside with plenty of room to move around.
  • Made from seriously durable materials and strong but light aluminum frame and poles.
  • Waterproof and withstands in windy conditions very well.

This tent is SO easy to set up you can easily just pop it up for the night. Or perhaps you are doing a multiple stop road trip where you need to set up camp every night or every second day.

One of the reasons people buy roof top tents is for their ease and convenience. With this tent you can set it up in no time. Literally takes 30secs to set up once its out of the bag, plus a few extra minutes to peg down and throw the awning up, if you wish.

Most of the RV series of tents are made from canvas., which is a heavy fabric. OzTent have considered this and made the RV3 & RV5 in lighter weight fabric. Canvas is a great fabric for tents because it is not only more weather proof against rain, moisture and dew, but its also less flappy in windy conditions. Any material will flap about in the breeze but the heavier material does offer a bit of extra protection against the flat factor on a windy night.

CON

  • Packed up size 2.2m L + weight 22 KG
  • Requires roof racks to transport.

The only “con” we could come up with after using this tent for 5+ years is the size/transport situation. It is built to last and it is made with a sturdy metal frame so it is not very compact. It is quite large when it is packed up so will not fit in most cars and require roof racks to transport the OzTent RV range. You will also need somewhere to store it when not in use.

This is not an issue for us because we do have roof racks and somewhere to store it when not in use. However, it is definitely a deciding factor for some people.

Alot of tents pack up super small and compact… This is not one of those small lightweight tents. It’s made from sturdy canvas which is a naturally heavier, more durable, weather proof fabric than the lighter weight tent.

Due to the long length of the packed up tent it is an awkward weight to carry, it seems heavier than 22kg once it’s all packed up. Not a deal breaker for us but could absolutely be a deal breaker for solo travelers.

The price might be a massive Con for some prospective buyers. It might be priced out of some peoples budgets, which is unfortunate however, if you are serious about camping this is value for money.

Our Experience with the OzTent – RV4

We own a RV4 and think this tent is amazing, so call it a semi biased/ honest review. It’s been an 8 yr love affair. There are a few different versions of this tent within the RV line of tents, based on size. The RV4 is what we own. In our opinion this tent is worth every cent if you enjoy camping and plan to camp regularly.

For us it takes the pain out of setting up and taking down a tent. We often camp somewhere overnight or on the weekend. It has withstood  the test of time with not a single fault. We suffered a few tears that were our fault that were easily repaired. Surprisingly we have not had to re-seal the waterproof seams or done any maintenance on the frame.

We have replaced the tent bag due to the amount of use it was getting. It did get ripped and we busted the zip so naturally required replacing. Luckily there are replacement bags available.

The RV line of tents has a heap of variations and addons you can buy. Awnings, side walls, additional rooms etc. It’s always good to grab the tent first and use it before buying the add ons because a lot of the time you don’t need all the bells and whistles. Plus this tent isn’t super cheap so you don’t want to blow the budget.

Who is OzTent?

Oztent is a well known Australian camping brand. It makes extremely well built tents, swags, 4wd’ing and camping equipment.

OzTent pioneered the first 30 second pop up tent which they call the RV. Within the RV line there is a RV3, RV4, RV5 and a few other variations. They then grew this brand from its success, going on to create other well known and loved products such as the Foxwing Awning.

Their products are made for harsh Australian conditions using durable materials, they are a reputable brand with great customer service. They also offer spare parts so your gear can be repaired and reused instead of replaced.
