Lancelin Sand Dunes

Lancelin, Adventure awaits

Adventure awaits in Lancelin. A short drive away from Perth CBD, this coastal town is a must visit.

With adventure, beaches, sand dunes, fishing, surfing, swimming and eating it’s the perfect day trip out of Perth or better still, make it a weekend away.

Just driving through Lancelin town it might appear to be a sleepy coastal town, just the way the locals like it.

It’s their little secret.

Little did you know this town is actually an adventure packed coastal town.

WA is split into regions, you might be familiar with the South West or the Coral Coast? Well little did you (and I) know that there is also the Turquoise Coast. This stretch of coastline includes Lancelin, Cervanties and Jurien Bay. Which is perfectly fitting because the water of Lancelin is the perfect shade of turquoise.

Getting There

Lancelin is 1 1/2hr drive from Perth CBD or 126kms.

Its a very direct drive and easily sign posted, you can’t miss it. Drive to the end of the freeway, take a right at Hester Ave, take a left onto Waneroo Rd (which turns into Indian Ocean Dr) and keep driving until you see the sign for Lancelin. Hook a left and you have arrived at your adventurous destination.

Activities and Adventure in Lancelin

Now when I say “adventure awaits”… I mean it. Lancelin offers a plethora of activities to entertain everyone.

Sand Dunes

Lancelin is known for its white sand dunes. If you walk up to the lookout at Lancelin Beach you can see the extent of the dunes.

In the sand dunes you can mob about on your 4wd, hire sandboards for the day, go on an Quad Bike tour and dune buggy hire. If you own a dirt bike you probably already know you can bring it up here to have some fun on the dunes.

You should know it gets very windy in Lancelin. Take protective clothing (especially sunglasses) from the sand blast if its a windy day or go when the wind is mild.

The sandboard hire is a must up in Lancelin, its really fun and a great activity for the whole family. No to mention great exercise running up and down the dunes. For only $12.50 you can hire one for a couple of hours of fun. Lancelin Sandboard HIRE

The dunes are open 24/7 however there is a sign that says it “opens at 8am”. There is no gate however there are noise restrictions, for respect for the locals. I believe this is mainly for the Quad Bike rental/hire and for the noisy dirt bikes, so be respectful of the noise pollution early in the morning.

If adventure is what you are looing for adventure awaits in Lancelin.

Beaches

It can get windy in lancelin, did I mention that already? Well I’m serious. So if you are going specifically for a beach day keep an eye on the weather or pick a weekend with low wind. The beaches here are stunning. There are 3 main beaches in Lancelin to enjoy.

  • 1) Back Beach: which is predominately a surf beach, you can drive your 4wd onto the beach, park up for the day and enjoy. The waves are consistent here that is what makes it a good surf beach. There is a surf school here if you are looking to hit the waves or learn how to surf. OR you can just hire a board at the surf shop in town.
  • 2) Lancelin Beach: is much calmer and quieter. Here is a lovely bay stretching from the Jetty to the lookout. There is a swimming pontoon and a net for the kiddies. Just on the otherside of the dunes is a lovely park for a bbq and a public toilet.
  • 3) North Lancelin Beach: Yes I totally made that up, I stumbled on this beach by accident. Just north of the “lookout” at Lancelin Beach there is another beach access point where you can drive the car on the beach or just park up in the car park and enjoy the beach. Personally I think this is the best beach. It’s calm, quiet and really picturesque.

Water Activities
  • Surfing: Back Beach is a well know surf beach (as I mentioned above). There is a surf school to learn how to surf or you can rent a surfboard.
  • Windsurfing / kitesurfing: because Lancelin is known for being windy it’s a great spot if you like windsurfing or kitesurfing. If you own one it’s a great spot to dust it off.
  • Kayak out to the Edwards Island Nature Reserve, just a few km’s off Lancelin Beach.
  • Fish: throw a line off the jetty at dusk or dawn to try your luck. If you are lucky you can get a whiting (or 2), tailor, herring and flat head. Or you can head to back beach to try your luck off the beach.

Eat and Drink

  • The Endeavour Tavern, doesn’t look like much from the road but the beer garden overlooks the beach and a lovely place for a feed and a cold beer. If you snag a good weekend they frequently have live music too.
  • The Dunes Restaurant, has a lovely balcony and outdoor dining area. It sits high up on the hill so the view is lovely.
  • The Offshore Cafe: is a coastal cafe that is a great stop in for breaky. A nice roll or wrap for lunch or better yet it has a great selection of gourmet pies and sausage rolls.
  • The Bakery: Can’t go to a country town without a visit to the local bakery. With classic custard tarts and apple pies, rolls and the meat pies are really good here too.
  • You can pre order crays direct from the fishermen that catch them. Lancelin is known for its crayfishing industry. You can preorder crays if you are heading up to Lancelin for the day. Simply check out the website here to see if you can grab a catch fresh off the boat.

Stay

If you want to spend the night there are plenty of places to stay.

Some upmarket air bnb’s with amazing beach views, budget coastal shacks, hostels, motels, camping and everything in between.

To sum it up… Adventure awaits in Lancelin. You just have to visit to experience the adventure Lancelin has to offer.

If you want a relaxing day on the beach and a bevy for lunch its worth the trip. If you want an adventure packed day full of sand dune fun, it’s definitely worth the trip out to Lancelin. Depending on how you like to enjoy the day, Lancelin won’t disappoint.
