07 Apr Peak Head Trail – Albany’s next best Hike.
Peak Head trail is a relatively easy 5km hike in Torndirrup National Park, Albany. Are you wanting to explore this national park but don’t have the fitness level or time to allocate to do the Bald Head trail? Peak Head is a great alternative. I think it is Albany’s next best hike.
Torndirrup National Park
The Bald Head trail is regarded as WA’s most highly rated hike however it is a daunting 12km or 4-5hrs. If you are physically challenged in any way this will be a struggle. Luckily there is lots to do and see in Torndirrup National Park. Such as the wind farm, brave the gap viewing platform, visit the some stunning beaches and also another shorter hike, called Peak Head.
If you don’t have the time or fitness level to tackle the Bald Head trail, Peak head is the next best option. It still boasts stunning views of the ocean, coastline and whales if it’s within the migration season.
There is plenty to see and do around Albany, if you are looking for inspiration. Here are my top 10 things to see and do in Albany.
Trail conditions
Peak Head trail is a 5km hike (actually 4.8kms) and meanders down a sandy trail to a large granite boulder at the end of the hike. There are large steps which make the sandy descent and ascent easier. There are rocky sections however it is classed as a relatively easy hike.
The final section was challenging due to the steep incline of the granite boulder. However the rock has a coarse texture so there is no concern of slipping or losing your footing.
Best time of year to Hike the Peak Head Trail
April – October
Most avid hikers will always favour Autumn, Winter and Spring due to the cooler weather. However the south west is a lot cooler than the Perth metro. The average summer temperature for Albany should be fine to do this hike. If you do plan to hike in summer, use your common sense and be prepared with plenty of sun protection and water. There is little to no shade on this hike.
This coastline is windy and you will be challenged if the weather is not ideal. If the weather is not looking to be very favourable for hiking don’t hike to the trail head as this may be dangerous.
Final Thoughts – Peak Head Trail
Unfortunately the Bald Head Trail has been closed intermittently over 2022-2023 for upgrades. These upgrades have been amazing to the trail popularity and tourists are flocking in droves to do this iconic South West hike. The trail car park and ablution block are also receiving upgrades which has closed the hike yet again in early 2024.
Luckily there is a great alternative – Peak Head. So if you are still planning a trip to Albany definitely add Peak Head to your list of things to experience in Torndirrup National Park.
