03 Feb Denmark, Western Australia.
DISTANCE FROM PERTH: 420 km approx 4 ½ – 5 hrs drive
Denmark is where amazing wine, beaches and forests await.
Everything from good fishing beaches, amazing wineries, amazing walks and hikes through the William Bay National Park.
The coastline is dotted with amazing surfing beaches, amazing fishing beaches and amazing looking beaches. If you’re a wino just start with Scottsdale Rd and there are plenty of top notch wineries you can just stop into as you drive through the countryside. This wine region is famous for its Rieslings, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir throughout Mt Barker, Scottsdale and Denmark / Pemberton.
However, if you are looking for a bit more adventure there is lots more to see and do in this area.
Did I mention the beaches in Denmark are STUNNING!
(here is a preview)
Denmark is lovely all year round, but if you visit Denmark in the warmer months so you can enjoy the stunning beaches. The coastline is pretty rocky and rugged but it contrasts against the crystal clear aqua and turquoise waters. All of the water is exceptionally cold but very refreshing on a hot day. Each of the beaches are unique and stunning.
Denmark Beaches to Visit:
- Greens Pool
- Lights Beach
- Elephant Rocks (beach/bay)
- Oceans Beach
- Anvil Beach
- Waterfall Beach
Hikes in and around Denmark
- Monkey Rock
- Sheila Hill Memorial Track
- Harewood Forest Walk
There are plenty of hikes in the national park (William Bay or West Cape Howe) if you want to explore the trails or enjoy part of the Bibbulmun track which runs through Denmark. In fact the Bibbulmun track actually ends in Albany which is only a 30min drive from Denmark. There is Monkey Rock in William Bay National Park which is a short walk to the top of a huge granite rock, it’s quick and easy and a great lookout point. Its a short 1 hr hike that’s worth a look. If you want something a bit more challenging there are a few Hikes between Albany and Denmark or in West Cape Howe National Park. You can read about the hikes in more detail here from a pro “Life Of Py” who has an amazing and very in depth hiking blog.
If you want to enjoy a stunning lunch visit either Forrest Hill winery or Castelli. These wineries offer a lovely dining experience alongside their amazing wines and picturesque wineries. Other wineries to check out would include (my personal favourite) Single File. However, we cant forget to mention Boston brewery for the lads. Boston brewery offers a playground for the kiddies and a huge grassed area for a chilled vibe in summer under the umbrellas.
There are lots of lovely air bnb’s to rent with stunning views of the wilson inlet or of course some lovely holiday villas if you are not an avid camper. In our experience, a quick google search and you will find somewhere to suit your style and budget.
Brief History of Denmark Town
Denmark town is pretty cute and a really nice drive through the tall Karri trees. The town sits on the banks of the Denmark River which runs through the town and a really popular kayak or SUP spot. They do have a kayak and sup hire down on the banks near the tavern if you don’t have one. The town was foundered in the late 1800’s due to the high demand for timber and the goldrush. The town of Denmark is situated in amongst the thick forests and were providing the goods Europe and the goldfields needed.
Denmark country town offers everything you need, supermarket, boutique shops, bakery, cafes and of course a tavern. In our opinion it is a good to spot to grab some provisions and a wonder around the quaint town. Although, it has some new editions it still has some cute character buildings representing its history.
In our experience, we can’t recommend the region highly enough, make the effort to go that little further into the south west and visit this “rainbow coast” town of Denmark.
Where We Stayed

Final Thoughts
There is so much to do in Denmark, anything from hiking, fishing, exploring beaches to exploring wineries and water activities (SUP and Kayaking). If you are planning on visiting the surrounding areas which include Bluff Knoll or Albany.. Or maybe you are planning to head back to Perth through Pemberton, then Esccape with Me has you covered.
