Is Tims Thicket is the closest 4wd beach to Perth? Its just 1hr south of Perth CDB, 10mins South of Mandurah. However Tims Thicket is not the closest 4wd beach to Perth. In my opinion as an amature 4wd owner, Tims Thicket is the most easily accessible 4wd beach to Perth. There is nothing better than pulling up on the beach and having your car right there with everything you need. If you are looking for a day trip in the Peel region this is a great option if you are a 4wd enthusiast or an armature.
Wilbinga is actually the closest 4wd beach to Perth (by about 10kms) however much more challenging to access with uber soft sand and a rabbit warren of tracks to access the beach. The track to access Wilbinga Beach is approx 10kms from the main highway vs Tims Thicket Beach has is an easy 1 km sandy track before you hit the beach. That’s why in my opinion Tims Thicket is the closest and most accessible 4wd beach to Perth.
Getting there
From Perth CBD it will take approx 1hr. Tims Thicket is about 10 mins south of Mandurah. Very easy to get there, take the Mandurah exit off the freeway and continue on until you reach Tims Thicket Road just south of the Dawesville Cut in Mandurah.

Being the closest 4wd beach to Perth it will get busy. Tims thicket is a dog friendly beach so feel free to bring your pooch. With the right swell there can be good surf, otherwise Tims Thicket is known to be a good fishing spot. There are parts of the beach that are really protected and shallow which make it great for families and kids. Other parts of the beach are quite rocky so just pick your spot wisely. It does get really busy down here on a nice day so plan to arrive early to get the best spots. There are always one or 2 idiots driving fast up and down the beach so if you do have kids and dogs… keep a close eye on wandering kiddies.
The beach itself is actually not that long. The first entrance to the beach is the best bay. It’s protected and calm with no rocks… perfect for families.
If you continue south for about 2km you hit the end of the beach at high tide. At low tide you can pass the rocks to reach the southern beach but more than not the tide is a bit high to pass.
Tims Thicket is 4wd access only
If you are an amature and own a 4wd that has never been off road and have literally no experience, this could be a great day trip from Perth to test out your wheels off road. After all it is the closest 4wd beach to Perth so you have no excuses. You will need to deflate your tires to at least 20psi and an air compressor to inflate your tires after you leave the beach.
If you have plenty of experience 4wding then this is just a good excuse to get out of Perth and actually use your 4wd. So often we only go 4wding when we are on holiday or on a camping trip (like ningaloo station or shark bay) because we actively seek adventure. However, we do forget there are plenty of places to explore on our doorstep. Tim’s Thicket is a great 4wd day out because its the closest 4wd beach to perth.
We found very soft sand at the entrance to the beach so we were at 17psi, the rest of the beach is pretty easy going. Make sure you bring a tyer deflator gauge to check tyer PSI. I have linked the one we use below as well as the air compressor to inflate the tyers when leaving the beach.
It is always a good idea to bring your Max Trax and recovery gear anytime you go off road. Luckily this beach is quite busy so it would be uncommon not to come across another vehicle.
Being a 4wd beach there are no toilets or facilities so you will need to bring food, water etc. Bin’s are provided at the entrance/car park so please use them.

Weather
Pick your day wisely. This part of the coast gets hammered by the SW winds. So go early or pick a day that has light winds. If you live in Perth I’m guessing you already know that but for those that are traveling around WA or exploring WA you might not be aware. Easterlies are the best for calm oceans. NW, NE and E will all give you super flat oceans and usually hot hot hot. The wind usually turns to a southwest wind around midday or in the afternoon.

So now all U need to do is look out for some good weather, pack the car and enjoy.
Please remember to leave it how you found it and don’t leave any rubbish, there are bins provided at the entrance so take your rubbish with you. There is already enough rubbish out in our oceans. Also the dunes need conservation so stick to the tracks provided.
